AgentKernel vs Daytona: local runtime or sandbox platform?
Choose AgentKernel for direct control over a local sandbox backend. Consider Daytona when you want its sandbox platform, environment tools, and infrastructure workflow. If you already use Daytona, AgentKernel also has an experimental Daytona backend, so adopting its CLI does not require moving execution immediately.

When to choose each
AgentKernel is a fit for developers who want to run commands on their own workstation or Linux host, select a backend, and integrate through MCP or the HTTP API.
Daytona is worth evaluating when your application benefits from its integrated environment operations. Compare the actual tools your agent needs; a successful shell command alone does not establish parity with Git helpers, terminals, previews, or other provider APIs.
Try a local sandbox
After installation and backend setup, with Docker available:
This trial explicitly uses local Docker container isolation. Select a different local backend only after completing its setup. The expected output is sandbox ready. For a repeatable session, follow the persistent sandbox quickstart.
Before moving an existing Daytona workload, list its image dependencies, files, secrets, ports, and lifecycle assumptions. Port one job and verify its results and cleanup. Rebuild the environment from its source definition; do not assume provider snapshots or saved process state are portable.
Use Daytona through AgentKernel
Follow the Daytona remote backend guide for the Node.js bridge, API credentials, and provider configuration. This retains hosted execution and provider costs. With workspace mounting enabled, the bridge synchronizes project files; review the working directory before enabling it.
Local AgentKernel execution has a different isolation boundary depending on the backend. Docker and Podman use containers; choosing them does not give you Firecracker VM isolation. Consult the backend guide before making that choice.
