AgentKernel vs E2B: a local execution alternative

Choose AgentKernel when you want to run agent commands on a machine you operate and select the isolation backend. Choose E2B when its managed sandbox service and code interpreter API fit your application. You can also use AgentKernel's experimental E2B backend to keep hosted execution behind the AgentKernel CLI.

When AgentKernel fits

  • You want local test or script execution without a sandbox provider account.
  • You need to choose a backend for the host: for example, Firecracker on Linux/KVM or Apple Containers on a supported Mac.
  • You want the same sandbox tool exposed through a CLI and MCP.

Local execution still uses your compute, storage, and maintenance time. An agent can also send data to its model provider or other network destinations. Selecting a local backend does not make the entire agent workflow offline.

Try the same command locally

Install AgentKernel and configure a backend, then run with Docker available:

This trial explicitly uses local Docker container isolation. Select a different local backend only after completing its setup. The expected output is 6. This is a shell-command smoke test. E2B's code interpreter exposes execution results and logs through its SDK; replacing that API with a shell command does not preserve notebook state, rich outputs, or exception handling automatically.

For a migration, first port one representative job. Recreate its dependencies, copy only its required input files, compare output and exit status, and then test timeout and cleanup behavior. AgentKernel and E2B SDKs are not drop-in replacements.

Keep E2B while trying AgentKernel

The E2B remote backend guide documents credentials, bridge setup, and workspace synchronization. That path still runs on E2B and requires its credentials; it does not turn a remote sandbox into a local one. Remote backends are experimental.

For local VM execution, verify backend requirements. Firecracker full-state pause and fork remain a separate preview capability.
